SATURDAY MARCH 5, 2011Gators Successful in Last-Chance Meets

South Bend, IN and Blacksburg, VA

Senior Florida sprinter Terrell Wilks (New Haven, Conn.) automatically-qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 60-meter dash and the women’s 4x400-meter relay team ran the seventh-fastest time in school history Saturday to highlight the Gators’ performances in a pair of last-chance meets – the Virginia Tech Qualifier in Blacksburg, Va., and the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Ind.

Wilks, who ran three rounds of the men’s 60-meter dash on Saturday in Blacksburg, tied his personal-best time, clocking an NCAA automatic-qualifying 6.59 in the finals, which ranks as the second-fastest time in school history in the men’s 60m. Wilks joins sophomore sprinter Jeff Demps (Winter Garden, Fla.) as the team’s two NCAA participants in the men’s 60m.

The women’s 4x400-meter relay team all but locked up a spot at the NCAA Indoor Championships, logging the seventh-fastest time in school history at 3:34.61 to place second overall in the field at the Alex Wilson Invitational. The quartet consisted for Ebony Eutsey (Miami, Fla.), Lanie Whittaker (Miami, Fla.), Danielle Williams (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Ugonna Ndu (Newark, N.J.).

“Obviously I’m very pleased with Terrell today,” Florida head coach Mike Holloway said. “He has been battling injuries all season and to come back and do what he did today was big. There were great efforts all the way around from our team. I am very proud of our women’s 4x400 team, running a time that will surely get them in. At this point, everything is complete and we know who is qualified. Now we just need to get back to Gainesville and get ready to go compete at a high level next weekend at the NCAA Championships.”

Sophomore thrower David Triassi (St. Johns, Fla.) placed third in the men’s weight throw competition with a personal-best throw of 20.33m/66-8.50. Triassi’s mark went down as the second-best in UF school history.

Eutsey, a freshman sprinter, tied her personal-best time, placing second in the women’s 400-meter dash at the Alex Wilson Invitational, clocking a 53.56.

Florida returns to action March 11-12, when it travels to College Station, Texas, to compete in the NCAA Indoor Championships at the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium on the campus of Texas A&M University.
